Came across an article the other day, in GQ of all places, with the headline “How to lose your love handles in three days.”
Here’s a snippet:
“For love handles, you have to work your legs. They’re the biggest muscle group in your body and they use the most amount of energy. They’re going to strip fat quicker than any plank. You need to do five sets of squats a day, increasing your weights daily. For man boobs you have to do loads of press ups. Do 50 or so a day, up to a 100, and you’ll see a difference in three days. Try it for a month and see if you have man boobs then.”
You can do as many sets of squats or press ups as you like. It will make not a jot of difference to the amount of fat you have stored around your waist or chest.
Same thing goes for any type of workout, be it Orangetheory fitness, Crossfit, P90X, HIIT, or whatever else you can think of.
That’s because when it comes to losing fat, the food you eat (or don’t eat) is a lot more important than what you do in the gym.
Brad Pilon, author of Eat Stop Eat, once came up with an interesting “thought experiment” on this very subject.
“I want you to STOP thinking about exercise as a way to burn calories and lose fat.
“Stop it. In fact, I want you to pretend that it’s not even possible, that somehow workouts don’t burn any calories at all.
“Think of your workouts as a way to build or maintain your muscle, and think of your diet as how you lose body fat and maintain low (but healthy) levels of body fat.
“That’s it. No cross over. Because from my experience that’s when the trouble sets in. Mindlessly killing yourself in the gym to burn fat, then purposefully overeating to ‘feed the machine’. This becomes a vicious cycle of doing a LOT of HARD work, but never really accomplishing anything.”
And that’s exactly what I suggest you do – treat your workouts as a way to put on muscle, and your diet as a way to strip away the fat.
While it may not be entirely accurate, pretending that it is will give you much better results in the long run.
